Ductwork Replacement and Repair in Tampa Bay, FL

If one bedroom never cools, the air handler runs nonstop, or your filter turns black in weeks, the problem may not be the outdoor unit. In Tampa Bay homes a large share of cooled air is lost through leaky, crushed or poorly sized attic ductwork. HROD HVAC designs, replaces and seals ducts across Tampa, Riverview, Brandon, Valrico and Apollo Beach so the air you pay to cool actually reaches the rooms that need it. Call (813) 647-6010.

Signs Your Ducts Are Failing
Florida attics are hot. Flex duct that is disconnected, torn, undersized or hanging in kinks dumps cold air into the attic and pulls dusty attic air back into the house. Warning signs include one or two rooms that stay hot while others feel fine, visible mold or dust streaks at register boots, a sharp rise in cooling bills without a lifestyle change, rooms that never get enough airflow even after a filter change, and an air handler that short-cycles or never shuts off. Builder-grade ductwork in fast-growing Hillsborough subdivisions often shows these issues as homes age and insulation settles around poorly supported runs.
Duct Design and Sizing
We do not guess at a “bigger” flex run and hope. We inspect and measure the existing ducts and registers, then plan airflow per room in CFM so supply and return match how the house is used. Two-story homes in Valrico and Brandon often need return and balancing corrections upstairs. Open floor plans may need trunk and branch changes rather than another outdoor unit. When a mini-split is the better fix for a single problem room, we will say so and point you to /mitsubishi-mini-split-installation-tampa-fl.
What a Duct Replacement Includes
A typical attic duct replacement removes failed flex and boots, installs new R-8 insulated flex or a metal trunk with new boots, seals every joint with mastic and UL-181 tape, hangs and straps the runs per code, then balances and tests airflow. We protect the work area as much as attic access allows and explain what you will see at the registers when we are done. If your equipment itself is undersized or worn out, ductwork alone will not fix humidity; we coordinate with replacement planning on /ac-replacement-tampa-fl when that is the honest path.
Sealing and Insulation
Many “duct jobs” fail because joints were only taped years ago and the tape dried out in attic heat. We seal with mastic at connections that matter, use the right tape where code calls for it, and keep insulation continuous so cold surfaces do not sweat. Sealing return leaks matters as much as supply leaks: a leaky return pulls hot attic air and humidity into the system and makes the coil work harder.
What Exactly Gets Done
- Inspect and measure existing ducts and registers
- Airflow design per room (CFM)
- Remove old flex and boots
- New R-8 insulated flex or metal trunk, new boots
- Mastic and UL-181 tape at every joint
- Hang and strap per code
- Balance airflow and test
Ductwork FAQs
Why is one room always hot?
Often the supply run to that room is crushed, disconnected, too long, or too small, or the return path is weak. Closing doors, solar gain on west-facing walls and two-story stacking make it worse. We measure before recommending a duct change, a balance adjustment or a ductless head for that room.
How long does attic ductwork last in Florida?
It varies with material, installation quality and attic conditions. Flex that was poorly supported, chewed by pests or cooked in a tight attic can fail in a fraction of the life of the outdoor unit. When we open the attic we show you photos of what we find instead of quoting a generic lifespan.
Does my utility offer help with duct repairs?
Some utilities in the Tampa Bay area run efficiency programs that can include duct sealing or related work. Program rules and amounts change. We can help with rebate paperwork when a program applies to your project; we do not invent dollar amounts. Ask us to check what is current for your address and electric provider.
Do I need new ducts when I replace my AC?
Not always. If the existing ducts are the right size, sealed and in good shape, they can stay. If they are leaky or undersized, putting a new high-efficiency system on bad ducts wastes money. We inspect ducts as part of replacement planning.
